Managing Attorney

Our client, a non-profit law firm in Lafayette, Indiana seeks a Managing Attorney. The organization proudly provides free legal assistance throughout Indiana to low income people in civil matters such as family, consumer, housing, health and income maintenance. This office serves clients who reside in a 14-county service area. The successful applicant will work in an environment that encourages all staff members to creatively seek ways of accomplishing our mission: to use the law to fight poverty, empower clients, and improve access to justice. 

The Managing Attorney will: 

  • Supervise a staff of 6, including 2 attorneys. 
  • Maintain a caseload.
  • Serve as a primary representative for the firm in the community.
  • Work closely with administration and other managing attorneys and foster collaboration with staff across the state.
  • Develop partnerships and working relationships with organizations in service area.
  • Ensure office compliance with all relevant statutes, rules and grant requirements.

The successful Managing Attorney has:

  • Minimum of 4 years' legal experience.
  • License to practice law in Indiana or able to become licensed by reciprocity or taking the next Indiana bar exam. 
  • Exceptional negotiation skills.
  • Proven litigation skills.
  • Preferred experience in family law, consumer law, government benefits including TANF, Medicaid, NSAP, SSI and SSD, landlord tenant defense, and knowledge of poverty law. 
  • Second language preferred.
