Steel Fabrication Estimator

Our client, Best Equipment and Welding, located in Indianapolis, has been an industry leader in the design and build of steel fabrication applications for the last 40 years. They are seeking an experienced Steel Fabrication Estimator with responsibility for accurately preparing and delivering timely estimates and bid proposals for custom fabricated products. In addition, this role will be involved with sales and business development and will require strong customer interaction skills. The client base includes, but is not limited to, manufacturing, construction, pharmaceutical, warehousing, and transportation companies.
This position reports to the Sales Manager, and is a part of the business development and project management efforts for custom steel fabrication applications.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage projects from estimation through delivery and installation.
- Communicate with customers ensuring regular touch points and clear expectations on capabilities, capacities, lead times, and quotes.
- Analyze blueprints, specifications, and other documents to prepare time, cost, and labor estimates for customers.
- Work collaboratively with shop foreman to coordinate fabrication activities conforming to drawings and customer specifications.
- Ensure accuracy of all components of estimating spreadsheets including labor hours, labor rates, internal cost allocations, assumption, material, transportation, and all buyout services.
- Manage Initial sales of projects to bring in shop work, while maintaining and building customer base.
- Perform accurate material quantity takeoffs and material pricing.
- Review and understand all bid documents, assess project risks, and prepare bid packages.
- Solicit vendor and subcontractor bids including comparing and analyzing competitive subcontractor and supplier bids.
- Prepare purchase agreements and subcontracts.
- Strategically evaluate, with senior management, profit margin potential, project risks, project fit, and competitive environment.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a cross-departmental environment.
- Experience in steel fabrication estimating, ideally with mezzanines, stairs, railings, material handling, and ladders.
- Ability to read and understand all construction plans and drawings related to structural steel projects.
- Demonstrated strong customer interaction and relationship building skills.
- Experience with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint with ability to manipulate Excel spreadsheets.
- Experience with PDF review/editing software (Acrobat).
- Proficient in developing CAD drawings with 3D modeling.
- Ability to communicate structural concepts for shop use is required.
- Demonstrated initiative, conflict resolution, confidentiality, and professionalism.
- Previous sales experience is a plus.
