About the role:
The controller will be hands-on and operations-focused, partnering closely with leadership and project teams. In this role they will lead the Finance and Accounting team, overseeing accounting, payroll, and office operations. The ideal candidate is a practical problem solver who can support day-to-day business needs, build a cross-trained team, and bring a disciplined, productive approach that helps move the company forward.

This role will be onsite at the company headquarters located on the south west side of Indianapolis.

Key Responsibilities:
Operations & Accounting Process Assessment
  • Support Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable activities including invoice entry, coding, routing, filing, creation of vendors, payment processing, customer setup, job billing, collections and payment tracking
  • Complete weekly bank and credit card reconciliations and process bank transactions
  • Manage month end closing, reconcile all balance sheet accounts
  • Coordinate jobs and change orders, ensuring timeliness and accuracy
  • Assist with preparation and submission of tax filings and payments (i.e. payroll and sales tax withholdings)
  • Assist external CPA with year-end reporting
  • Utilize Foundation and related systems to support accounting and operational workflows

Weekly Payroll Administration
  • Oversee the weekly payroll process, including processing when needed
  • Conduct related payroll reporting, including certified payroll, union reporting, union fringe benefits payments, and OCIP reporting
  • Process employee-related payments including reimbursements and legally required withholdings
  • Onboard new employees in the payroll system and maintain accurate employee records
Operations and Office Administration Support
  • Manage vendor certificates of insurance and related compliance tracking, maintain vendor and customer records
  • Assist with insurance renewals, audits, and documentation requests
  • Manage permissions and access within accounting systems

Ideal Qualifications:
  • 10+ years of progressive experience within accounting and finance
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in accounting, CPA preferred
  • Demonstrated success leading and developing a team of direct reports
  • Strong cost accounting background, previous experience working in a projects based company
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, practices and regulations
  • Proficiency in financial analysis tools and software, experience with Foundation software is preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, especially with Excel
